Joburg gets $32m to turn waste into energy

From the newsletter
South Africa has received a $32 million grant from the Netherlands to advance a waste-to-energy (WtE) project in Johannesburg. The initiative will generate 28 MW of electricity from municipal waste, enough to power 60,000 households. A private-sector partner will develop and manage the project under a 25-year concession agreement.
The money will flow through the Infrastructure Fund, South Africa’s blended-finance vehicle designed to transform public infrastructure. The fund will help reduce risks for investors and make it easier for private companies to get involved.
With rapid urbanisation, waste generation in African cities is rising sharply, and landfill space shrinking. WtE projects offer a solution by diverting waste from landfills, generating electricity to meet growing demand, and reducing urban pollution.
