South African energy firm Mulilo Energy was awarded four projects, totalling 1,972 MWh for battery energy storage systems. That's approximately 80% of the total capacity sought in the third bid window of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). Norwegian-based Scatec won the remaining project.

  • South Africa rolled out the BESIPPPP in 2023 to supplement the grid in the wake of growing intermittent renewables. Since then, 18 projects in three bid windows, totalling 6,976 MWh of storage, have been selected for development.

  • The program has seen a significant reduction in project evaluation prices, with Bid Window 3 (BW3) prices showing a 40% decrease compared to Bid Window 1 (BW1) and an 8% decrease relative to Bid Window 2 (BW2).

  • Our take: South Africa needs to strengthen its local manufacturing of renewable energy technologies to tap into the growing BESS market… Read more (2 min)

Egypt has completed the construction of a 500 MW solar plant, just a few weeks after announcing another 500 MW wind project that was finished six months ahead of schedule. The country is showing success in delivering large-scale projects, which many countries have failed at either due to funding shortfalls or project complexities.

  • Egypt has relied on public-private partnerships to deliver mega-projects that would otherwise be tricky due to the government’s financial challenges, a common problem in Africa.

  • Taking a step forward by allowing private-to-private power supply, Egypt last week approved the first batch of 400 MW of renewable energy projects from independent power producers (IPPs) for direct supply to industrial clients.

  • Our take: Has Egypt cracked the code for fast-tracking renewables?… Read more (2 min)

Energy projects in Africa received $17.6 billion in funding in May. Morocco dominated, mainly thanks to $14 billion from a public-private partnership deal with the UAE for its power and water sector. Proximity to Europe and low labour costs have made it a prime destination for investments. New manufacturing plants include Africa's first wind blade factory.

  • The Renewables Rising funding database shows Morocco received a total of at least $15.6 billion in funding, triple that of second-placed South Africa. This includes a loan of $327 million from the EIB for energy infrastructure.

  • Morocco’s headline $14-billion deal includes the construction of 3,000 MW in high-voltage direct current transmission lines and 1,200 MW of renewable energy projects.

  • Our take: Funding has increased in May but is concentrated in a few countries with strong electrification progress… Read more (2 min)
