Solar imports from China hit a new record

Africa has once again broken its solar import record — for the fourth consecutive year. New data from Ember, the think tank, shows the continent imported 13.2 GW of solar modules from China in the nine months to September, surpassing the 12.7 GW set in 2024. This is the continuation of a remarkable solar boom that has reshaped the continent's energy transition.

  • South Africa remains the largest buyer, having imported 2.48 GW, but its dominance is declining as other countries emerge as new growth hubs.

  • A recent proposal by China to impose production cuts and withdraw its 13% export VAT rebate, scheduled to take effect this quarter, is expected to increase prices and may slow the current growth trajectory.
