Telecom networks go green to cut costs

Telecommunications companies across Africa are turning to solar and hybrid power systems to cut energy costs and lower emissions. IHS Towers in Nigeria announced this week that it has reduced diesel consumption by 49.8 million litres, resulting in $49 million in annual recurring savings. And it's moving even to hybridise towers connected to the grid with solar.
Others, like Vodacom South Africa, have made great strides in sourcing their power from renewables, becoming the first company to run entirely on 100% renewable energy.
In Kenya, companies like Safaricom, despite already benefiting from a relatively green national grid, are hybridising their telecom towers with solar systems. So far, 1,432 sites are powered by solar, with a target of 3,000 additional sites by 2027.
