Maximising grid-tied mini-grids is the future

From the newsletter
Interconnected mini-grids (IMG) are emerging as one of Africa’s most promising responses to its long-running electricity challenges. A new report by RMI, a global non-profit focused on transforming energy systems, shows that blending local renewables with main-grid supply boosts reliability, raises consumption and cuts costly diesel use.
IMGs are minigrids that exchange power with a larger grid, either importing or exporting as needed. They blend local distributed energy resources with grid supply to improve reliability, flexibility, and efficiency.
In Nigeria, four IMG projects now serve over 13,000 connections, raising supply from under 3 hours to over 15 hours a day. Metered connections are up 62%, and commercial use far exceeds that of isolated systems.
