Africa’s largest faith group turns to solar
Dear subscriber, the power of the sun now stretches from utility grids to pulpits. The Church is plugging into solar, we report. Plus, Scatec’s modular systems promise more speed, and we note the latest hiring wave. Regards, Sammy Jamar
Solar energy is reaching every corner of society, and now, it’s lighting up churches. The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has partnered with Huawei Technologies to power more than 4,000 Catholic institutions in the country. Across Africa, faith-based institutions are fast embracing solar power as clean energy becomes central to daily life. |
This is a significant milestone for renewables. The Catholic Church is by far the largest faith organisation in Africa, representing almost a third of the continent’s population and operating more than 73,000 churches.
In Kenya, the Church is going a step further, using solar not only to power its facilities but also to support electric mobility. Through a partnership with EV company Spiro, it plans to install charging stations at churches nationwide.
Our take: The Church’s vast community could form one of the continent’s largest distributed energy networks… Read more (2 min)
Release by Scatec, a subsidiary of Scatec ASA, is rolling out a new solar panel mounting structure designed in South Africa to make clean energy faster and cheaper to deploy. The company has signed lease-to-own deals for 64 MW of solar power and 10 MWh of storage in Liberia and Sierra Leone, its first projects using the new mounting structure. |
Traditionally, African power projects have used debt-heavy EPC contracts that took years to complete. Scatec’s leasing model turns energy into an operating expense, helping utilities expand faster and manage costs better.
With nearly half of the continent facing debt distress, this approach offers governments a way to develop large-scale projects quickly and without major upfront costs, a model already common in C&I solar markets.
Our take: Scatec’s new mounting tech and lease-to-own model will speed projects and cut costs… Read more (2 min)
New jobs this week total 160 roles from agencies and energy firms. Pay-as-you-go pioneer M-Kopa continues a three-week hiring spree with nine new positions open in four countries amid strong 2024 revenue growth of 66%. Other companies with major job adverts include Zutari with 11 jobs, Scatec Solar with six, and d.light with eight open positions in Nigeria. |
The decentralised / off-grid sector dominates in hiring. Power for All, d.light, and Sun King's numerous field sales and support roles confirm the continued growth of the PAYGo solar model across East and West Africa.
O&M roles, especially those involving Solar PV and BESS, highlight the growth of completed projects as developers shift their focus toward ensuring long-term asset performance and reliability.
